Overview

Hamta is a beautiful mountain located in prominent town of Manali, stretching and spreading distantly from lush green Kullu Manali valley to the barren landscapes of spiti. The route adjoins totally varying expanses with the multiple days of trekking consisting of immense beauty ornamented with dense forests of deodar striking meadows and a variety of flowers spurring into the landscape. Primarily when there wasn’t any road built over the Rohtang Pass (13052ft.) the route was opted by the local dwellers wanting to reach the other side of Spiti valley for trade or any other exchanges and also by the shepherds migrating towards highland meadows to get ideal pastures. It is the most enjoyed trek amongst the enthusiastic voyagers seeking for an amazing weekend in the Himalayas. The trek is so diverse and distinct filled with foliage, into the stunning valleys, glacial lakes, streams, waterfalls, distant snow patches to the arid and deserted vale. The trail goes through a passage surrounded by the Rocky Mountains and accompanied by a gushing stream a tributary of river Beas fed by several torrents. However these torrents obstruct on places with only option of crossing through the chilling water comprehending one with the true Nature of Himalayan Region. The valley narrows further into the passage giving an opportunity at times to have a look on meandering valley left behind. There are times when one has to cross through several chilling torrents, streams rushing to reach major rivers each sides of the valley. Hampta pass elongates at 4200m, a decent mark that can be attained by experienced trekker or even can a rookie. The pass is the gateway to enter into the different world, a world of dry and desolate expanse. On this side nights are freezing and winds are chilling but the landscape and sky is so pure and lucid that one will forget the wintriness for a moment. Gazing stars constellations at such heights is often amazing.

Day 2:Chika to Balu Ka Ghera (Altitude: 12,000 ft)
On this day, the trek will begin from Chitka which will take you through grasslands and rocky paths to the next site. On the way you will witness grasslands which are covered with beautiful wildflowers post monsoon season. The trail further leads to a small stream of about 10 ft, with ice cold water. This stream needs to be crossed carefully as the rocks are slippery. So remove your shoes for a better grip and also getting yourself wet may ruin your further days. Moving along you’ll get to a flat area, covered with sand depositions. Now you are not too far away from your destination. Another half an hour walk will lead to your campsite. From here you can view the beautiful Bandarpunch peak of the Dhauladhar Range.

Day 3: Balu Ka Ghera to Shea Gohru (Altitude: 12864 ft)
After breakfast and packed lunch at 7 a.m you will leave for “Shiya Gohru”. Today’s half way will be a stone and a bit climbing and you will reach “Hamta Pass Top” within 3 hours of camp. After the top, Shia Gohru will remain completely descended, which is a little risky, Trek begins to surround the pool of water to enter the -partially dried Himalayan river bed. The climb is all the way from Hampton. As you cross, you enter Lahaul region and the change in scenes is very the opposite. The path is completely downhill from the pass. After some walk you will be able to see the “Shia Gohru” camping site in the direction of the flow of the river. Here you have to cross the river which is very cold. This river is born from Hamta Glacier. After crossing this river you will reach the camp. It will be the coldest night in the camp.

Day 4 : Shea Goru to Chhatru (Altitude: 13,943 ft.)

There is a stream flowing by your campsite which needs to be crossed. You must cross the river in the early hours of the day as the water level will be low at this time of the day. The ice-chilled water will almost freeze you but the experience will be mind blowing. There will be a night halt at Chhatru campsite.
